NORFOLK -- The circus came to town 30 years ago today and not far behind came a blizzard.
In all, nearly 14 inches of snow fell on Norfolk – the most since 1892.
Gale force winds created snow drifts eight-feet high in some areas. Cars were abandoned in the middle of the streets and snow covered them.
At 5:30 p.m., the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake imposed a curfew, banning all traffic.
2,300 people attending the afternoon Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey show were forced to stay the night at Norfolk Scope and Chrysler Hall.
