IVOR - In church, you come as you are. That's especially true inside the Whitetail Chapel in Ivor.  Clothing is optional for everyone from the pastor to the congregation.

"I really don't think God cares what you wear when you worship," said Richard Foley, a member of the congregation. "The thing is worship."

Churchgoers like Foley have no problem getting the word of God from a pastor in his birthday suit.

"Some of the biggest moments in Jesus' life he was naked," Pastor Allen Parker said. "When he was born he was naked, when he was crucified he was naked and when he arose he left his clothes in the tomb and he was naked. If God made us that way, how can that be wrong?"

Pastor Allen says the congregation is a family-oriented one and is very involved in helping others.

The Whitetail Chapel is part of the Whitetail Nudist Resort, the only year-round nudist resort in Virginia.  It opened in 1984 and business is booming.  More than 10,000 people visited last year and business is up 12 percent from a year ago.

"Obviously, we're doing something people like," said Michael Dougherty, the resort's office manager.

Visitors say being a nudist is about being free from societal judgments.  They say it's a stress-free environment where everyone is equal and there's no pressure to be anything than who you really are.

The pastor agrees.

"I consider this a gift and a privilege God has given me," said Pastor Allen. "They're caring, they're understanding, and they're community and family oriented. We have one of the most involved chapels anyplace around. I'll put our church up against others around."

I have not been to this church nor have I heard of it until now. Reading all the comments though hurts my heart. I am a Christian and am in ministry. Personally I believe in the nudist lifestyle. I don't have the freedom in my area to do so much at all. It is so easy to throw scriptures about defending your position. One person said that this church defies the norm of society. When u really LOOK at our world, it is more about self absorbedness, anger, violence and God is being ask ones less and less even in America. If the prophet. Isaiah, who spent 3 yrs preaching in the nude or Jesus himself showed up in your town nude would u fall on your knees or start lecturing them with scripture? The bible can be interpreted many different ways. For me, spending $4.00 for coffee at Starbucks is not being frugal with Gods money. Are those people wrong and hellbound? I sincerely feel that as God said, come to me as little children, that means with their innocence and untainted spirit.

Well said correctlev18. It never ceases to amaze me when people base the entirety of their argument on a paraphrase from a source, then offer some loosely related, though not really pertinent quote to try and appear researched and scholarly. Often, the paraphrase or summary is a grossly loose interpretation of the text, as was the case with lev18. Frankly, the bible is written so poetically that the passages can be interpreted to support almost any argument. Fact of the matter is, no one has spoken to ANY of the deities in our society and until one does, we simply are tasked with trying to be good and just people. I still think the nudist who worships and lives or recreates in a loving, caring, supportive community of friendship and decent camaraderie is living a far more moral, kind and good life that the pretend Christian who spreads hate and twists the bible's word to their own ends to support arguments that make them feel better about their own personal baggage.

LEv18, the scriptures you quote are not dealing with nudity, no more than saying someone is sleeping together has to do with sleeping. The phrase is to uncover one nakedness. It does not say to uncover your own nakedness. It refers to one person doing something to someone else. In that vein, at best, you might be able to argue that a nudist shouldn't force others to get naked. The phrase is really about sex. to uncover one's nakedness means to have sex with them. Everyone here has been given the opportunity to offer scriptures that deal with nudity and no one has. I can't believe it is because no one looked. The reason nothing is offered is that there isn't any. For those who think nudists shouldn't have a church, who then should work in that community? Who will comfort their sorrows? Who will pray for the sick, feed the hungry and supply those needs? I assume you have heard of the Great Commission. Perhaps God meant the nudist community, too. God bless.

Just a thought to those Christians (cherubian and jdawn46) who knee-jerk all over the place. I'd like you to look in your Bible and find a genuine reference to social nudity being bad, barring those who acted sinfully. Your reactions are typical, culturally-influenced and annoying. Your kind of thinking, i.e. what's normal and abnormal, could be applied to most denominational differences with the same biased result. I'm not feeling the love here!

Read Leviticus 18 - Amongst not exposing nakedness it says not to engage in homosexuality and not to have sex with animals, then the passage ends with: "For whoever does any of these abominations, those persons who do so shall be cut off from among their people. Thus you are to keep My charge, that you do not practice any of the abominable customs which have been practiced before you, so as not to defile yourselves with them; I am the LORD your God." For those who say "judge not" - you need to consider this is not a matter of mans judgment but a matter that God has judged already - as an abomination. For those who practice these things - I would urge you not to invoke the name as Christ in what you are doing so as not to incur further judgment on that day. For those who are requesting scripture - plenty of verses have been provided throughout the posts but . . . Romans 1:28 says God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.

I also want to add, that you all look so good! For people who dont know about White Tail. It is a beautiful resort. There is always something to do. Be it the church, fund raiser's to help other's. These people are families who join 2~gether and take care of one another. White Tail is a community that welcomes all. It doesn't matter if you are white or black or skinny or fat. This is the 1st place that did not judge me for what I had to offer. They all welcome me as a person. This resort is kept clean and is beautiful... They have a dinner hall, a library, game room, exercise room. An Yes even a church. So to all who read this, just know that ur dr or lawyer or ur neighbor maybe a nudiest. This facility is beautiful and if it peeks ur interest, go visit and see for ur self. I have to add that the nude pool volley ball is the greatiest.... Love to all at White Tail.... I am a member of WTR and any concerns about security can be put to rest. You can't get in there if you have stolen a candy bar in 3rd grade, much less have a sexual or violent offense. As for claims of sexuality, sexuality does not exist there. I am hesitant to even give my wife a peck on the cheek lest it be misinterpreted - there is no sexual contact at the park. As for God, God would rather you be in church naked, piously worshiping and being a spiritual person with good morals, then be out sinning and spreading hate with your clothes on. Which brings me to Robert, you should be ashamed of your extremely un-christian personal attack on people's appearances, people whose medical history you do not know, with your assumptions of gluttony. You shame and embarrass Christians everywhere by behaving so childishly and maliciously toward your fellow man. I should report you for violating the rules of this forum but God has already seen your words of hate and he will handle you!

I am actaully quite angry how you are distorting the Word. Pinning God's name to what you are doing. You would be better off writing your own Bible, as what you are doing is clearly not taught in the Bible. And PLEASE, saying that Jesus was naked when he was born (which we all are - how odd would it be if we were born with clothes on) and that he was naked when he was executed is hardly an argument - It begs belief that this is what you base your ideas on. Why not look at how Jesus dressed for the 99.99999999999% of the rest of His life

Genesis 3 v 10: "The man replied "I heard you [God] moving about in the orchard, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid". And the LORD God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" If this is not clearer enough, then I suggest you go back to your bible. Also, looking at the size of some of you in the church (I mean, you're pretty big), I find it difficult to understand how you can stand there naked without any shame. Perhaps you should also read what the bible says about our bodies being temples, and about the teaching of gluttony.

Are there 42 vereses,,and ALL mention nudity as good???? Was Jesus seen naked, at least twice,,publicly?? Did he say it was a sin?? Did God tell Adam and Eve to cover themselves?? Well,,Why NOT??????? Please feel free to e-mail me, at pinoysunrise2001@yahoo.com I am not ashamed to be a nudist,,I GLORIFY in being nude,,as well as taking care of my body. Why do you REALLY think you need clothes on?? To impress others?/ Do you think the bible is wrong??or,, were you simply brainwashed, into thinking what you were taught, since being a kid?? Do you EVER see a nude kid,, thinking he is doing some kind of sin???? Well,,TELL me,,I am all ears. I suspect there is more joy, and harnony, ( and, YES,,safety) in a nude church , as there is in the one you go to,,and you blindly send your kids to,,, ask a priest what is common there.

The word of the Lord. REV 3:16-19 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

God bless all you that have commented here.Especially those that choose to pass judgment. Why should anyone be forced to feel shame for standing before their creator in the form in which they were created? Adam and Eve were not created wearing anything! No physical covering! And they were created in His image. So what it sounds like to me is that some people are ashamed of being seen in the image that God made them and others are not .And if your not ashamed to be seen as you were created, in His image, then you are a shameful person and need to repent your shameful ways. But if your ashamed to be seen as He created you, in His image, then you need not feel shame if you go about clothed in a sociably (of man) acceptable manner. What a shameful concept!!! He tells us to approach Him with the innocence of a babe. How many babes are ashamed of their nakedness? Being ashamed of living in a natural state is something taught not something inherent. Try clothing yourselves in righteousness.

Lets get one thing straight here, Adam and Eve were not nude. They were naked. The difference being without clothing, yet they were covered by GOD's glory. They never walked around nude. The moment they sinned they lost their covering and quickly clothed themselves; they were ashamed. From the above picture I'd say this church needs a good dose of shame. Although I don't see lust being a problem from what I could see, perhaps discussed!

I counsel you to buy from me white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness. - Revelation 3:18 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. - 2 Corinthians 5:1-4

Wow. I really hope the disciples had suits and ties on. how offensive it must have been to Christ to see humans in various states of undress. Do they get a pass because society told them to dress different back then? Hmm. I also feel sorry for the poor souls who feel that the only time to be naked is when sex is involved. How many of gods creatures hide their nudity in designer clothes? All that said, it is certainly not for everyone, but just because you can't stand your body or are so high on yourself that you think everyone who sees you naked would want you sexually doesn't mean the rest of these people are that twisted. There is no sexual tension there at all. Whitetail is not a place to put on a persona, it is a place to be you. Want to meet some nice people who like each other for who they are? Visit once.

I am a born again christian, and I am not passing judgement, but your own christian views are wrong if you can't see a naked person without lusting. The naked body is something beautiful just the way God made it! There is a big difference between nudity and sexuality. You can admire what God has made without lusting after it.

What you will find exposed there besides bodies are people comfortable and confident with themselves, kindness, warmth, laughter, friendship, and a community spirit that surpasses any other community in which I have ever resided. They are not a cult, sinful or shameful. Nudity does not equal sex or sin.

If this place wants to hold church services naked...that's their choice. If they want to do some snake ritual, that's their choice too. We do have the constitutional right to freedom of religion in this country. Just because you don't agree with it, doesn't make it wrong or a sin.

The meaning of scripture is how you interpret it. That could be a dozen different ways. Doesn't make my way or your way right or wrong. You chose to live by the way you have interpreted the scripture and I chose to live by the way I interpret the scripture. Some people read more into scripture than what was really meant to be understood. You can take the scripture and decipher it into the way you want to understand it. Please do not inflict your interpretations upon others and make them believe they way you have interpreted scripture.

A person should not make judgements on something for which they have no experience. We are all God's children. I don't think he would care if I was dressed in a burlap bag or naked. Take a look around Sunday in your church. The chances are great there are nudists amongst you. It could even be the preacher.

Where was it written you had to wear clothes to church? This is a nudist resort, you have a choice to be naked or not in the church. I have been to Whitetail a few times and you cannot just sachet in the gate. This is a gated community. You have to pass a background check to get any further than the office. Oh yes, they are checking for any perverts, convicted felonies and anything inappropriate. So....to that person who is concerned about children, there are more convicted felonies and pedafiles in YOUR surrounding neighborhood than you would ever see in this community. They do the one thing you don't, screen every individual that comes thru the gate....bet you can't do that. From what I can see they run a tight ship. You couldn't do anything inappropriate. If you are even thinking about being inappropriate, don't bother to come in because you will be noticed sent packing fast. No one is inviting sexual temptation- who said anything about sex, your mind is in the gutter.

I understand the concerns that have been posted, but I also know that the Bible says, "Judge not, that ye be not judged." While the worship methods are unorthodox at that particular church, there are other churches with unorthodox methods as well. We tend to give hasty judgements when we are on the defense. As a Christian, I would definitely be careful about calling the church a cult. If we want to change someone's opinion or get them to see our viewpoint, it won't happen if we resort to name calling and demonizing. We only alienate people when we do that and push them further into whatever it is they are doing. Even when we think or know we're right about something, shouldn't we seek God before we speak on the matter? Whether or not we agree with this church, we have to be careful not to slip into Pharisees mode- doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.

Cherubian and Jdawn46, You talk of teaching and that we are misleading and that sexual predators are all over the place, the fact is that there are probably more child molesters, pedafiles that attend your church and where you are everyday then will ever be at White Tail resort, Get a grip and look into what you say, don't just blindly say that we are lunatics and evil . we are probably standing right next to you, on the bus in the coffe shops and teaching your children. the only reason that allot of folks don't disclose that they are nudists is your close minded and misleading comments on subjects that you haven't a clue about. Just like the comments below. Thanks to all those that have positive comments and that have open minds and hearts. Maybe we all should stand in front of a mirrir and look at ourselves. I think that the lunacy begins when you have a closed mind, open your heart and soul to jesus and god and then you will see the real light. I have been a member here at White tail for7 years and it is the most relaxing place on earth. No strings and nothing out of the ordinary, except the obvious. If you even had a clue as to how to act in public or if you could even imagine what it is to be free from wondering whether something or someone will look at you becauce of what you where. Out here you are taken for face value, literally, and if you really believe that if something is permissable and think that it is still wrong, then you need to get a grip. The Bible is Gods' guidance, and we all see it different, but if you think that the Bible is saying to look away form evil appearances, then maybe God is saying bare it all and see what you see. We as nudist do not want to offend anyone and we belive that we are as close to God and Jesus as anyone is, we just choose to worship Nude.

I am a Christian and am appalled that this church is teaching it's okay to come to church naked, did they not forget that once Eve ate the apple in the Garden of Eden they're nakedness was exposed, you are promoting sexual temptation the word specifically states that a woman should be modest in her dress and that looking upon a woman in a lustful way is sin, if that is the case you all are setting yourselves up for adultery, affairs, and God knows what else in your church, and what about all the child molesters running around out there, this is a perfect opportunity for them to prey on children there, I'm sorry but this church is SEVERELY deceived by the enemy, I mean at a church I used to go to they had to put restrictions on the dress codes for the teenagers in the youth group because of the problems it was causing, this is very weird

Live and let live! This Chapel is located on the nudist resort property, so let them do what they want. I myself wouldn't attend something like this, but that is MY CHOICE. I thought this was America - freedom of CHOICE! And as far as attending church nude - Adam and Eve were nude until they ate the forbidden fruit - then they wanted to cover themselves - not because God told them to. And I do agree that some people use church/temple/etc. as a fashion show - and THAT is shameful!

If someone new is invited how comfortable are they gonna be...what if someone has had a struggle with pornography..seeing naked bodies is not gonna help this person struggling with this sin.

Just to clarify... people do not just wander into this chapel, it is on the premises of a nude resort/community, so people who go know what to expect! It is definitely NOT a cult, and the children, especially the ones who have been going to White Tail for years, are some of the most well-adjusted and self-assured children I know. There is nothing dark or sinister going on, this is a happy, warm community of people who happen to like to go without clothes. When all you are wearing is your personality, people get to know the real you, and you are judged on WHO you are, not on what you wear, or how much money you have. There is no better place in the world!

For the person who thinks that it is not of the norm to go church nude, take a look at going to church with clothing on your body. If it isn't a fashion show, like at some black churches, it is a stare down situation at some white churches. It is always how you look and your status when it comes to going to church. Some may say that it isn't like that atmy church, but I beg to differ. It is what is inside of you that counts. Your love for Jesus is what you are there for, not the fact that Vera Wang made your dress, Coach made the bag, the suit is from Gucci, and your shoes are from Italy. So why subject the church to that standard when you are there for worship? I honestly think that God would not be impressed with your wealth and status, but that he would embrace the "Come as you are" attitude to live the word of God reguardless if you are clothed or not. As for the fact of digging deeper into Naturism and the children, you will find that we are all alike, we just don't wear clothes.

Just because something is permissable, does not mean it is the right thing to do. This nudist chucrh is totally abnormal and going against the norms of our society. What in the world can be accomplished by going to church nude and what if someone wants to visit the church and are confronted with nude people. The Bible says stay away from the appearence of evil and be carfeul not to offend, this is deeply offensive. These are not Christians, they are a cult and I am sure if you dig deeper, you will find stranger things going on. What about the children?? Are they exposed to this lunacy? If they are they all need to go to jail for child endangerment.
