UPDATE 8-11: No charges will be filed against either party involved in Thursday's accident, according to State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya. The trooper was released from the hospital Thursday evening and is recovering at home, Anaya said.
NORFOLK -- A Virginia State trooper caused a chain reaction crash that clogged I-264 West during rush hour Thursday.
According to State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya, Trooper A. P. Leigh was following a speeding vehicle around 6 p.m. when the driver made a sudden lane change to avoid stopped traffic on the approach to the hill crest near Newtown Road.
Trooper Leigh couldn't stop or maneuver around those cars and rear-ended a vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash involving six vehicles, said Anaya.
The trooper and another driver were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Sgt. Anaya added.
On Friday, Anaya said the trooper was "doing well" and "recovering."
The crash remains under investigation.
