NEWPORT NEWS -- "She was banged up pretty bad: broken leg, broken ankle, a collapsed lung, and a dislocated shoulder," said Christopher Russell, referring to his mother.

Tuesday, June 25, somebody hit Tanya Brown along Jefferson Avenue above Richneck Road. The driver of the car left her in the middle of the roadway.

"I believe that there are two things you just can't hid from, you know, that's your conscience and God," Russell told 13News. "I don't know what the circumstances were, maybe they panicked and drived off, but you just don't to that. You don't do that to people."

Russell thinks his mother may have been walking to a bus stop that sits along Jefferson. The stretch of road where the car hit her doesn't have a sidewalk and doesn't have good lighting.

Newport News police officers have no leads pointing them in the direction of the car or its driver. There were witnesses when Brown was hit which happened at about 10 p.m. on the 25th. Anyone with information can contact them through Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Russell said his mother's condition is improving. He's not sure how long she'll be in the hospital, but the stay may include her birthday, July 7, when she turns 56.
