VIRGINIA BEACH -- Some high school students, along with jean manufacturer Volcom and the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Marketing Education Program, have collected more than 6,200 pairs of jeans for the homeless with the "Give Jeans a Chance" program.

The idea behind it is that extra pairs of jeans that no longer fit or aren't worn any more can make a big difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

"Everybody or most people do have that one pair of jeans that just sits in their closet and collects dust," said Diana Bayless, a Kellam High School student, "to us it's something we don't really think about, we don't take a second look at, but to somebody else it's a huge necessity."

Students went from schol to school picking up used or unworn jeans, offering incentives like gift cards and raffles to help generate enthusiasm.

"It's nice to know that your like helping out someone that may not have any pairs," said Alyssa Adams.

These students plan to continue "Give jeans a chance" next year, and hopefully increase their numbers.

"Seeing the looks on these kids faces as we went there, seeing them completely excited to give back to the community like that it was inspiring. Next year I mean there's no limit, we could double, triple, quadruple the amount next year," said Carl Miciotto.

The jeans will be delivered to homeless shelters Wednesday morning, but jeans can still be dropped off for donation at Coastal Edge at 21st St. and Arctic at the oceanfront.
