NEWPORT NEWS -- The Peninsula Health District lifted a swimming advisory at Huntington Park Beach last week, and on Tuesday the 19th, restrictions were lifted at Hilton Beach.

According to a release, bacteria levels in the water at Huntington Park and Hilton Beach now meet the State Water Quality Standards.

Environmental health officials sample Hilton, Huntington, Yorktown, King-Lincoln and Anderson public beaches on a weekly basis during the swimming season from May to September.

To minimize the risk of illnesses from exposure to recreational waters,  the Peninsula Health District  recommends that residents and visitors should follow these guidelines during the summer swimming season:

•    Do not swim in water that looks stagnant or muddy or that smells unpleasant.
•    Avoid swallowing river, stream, lake or other recreational water.
•    Prevent direct contact between broken skin and recreational water.
•    Avoid swimming in recreational waters for several days after a heavy rainfall.
