HAMPTON - A second person has been arrested as police investigate the murder of a woman killed as she tried to help a friend.
35-year-old Latonya Marie Birsner died less than an hour after being shot Wednesday morning at a home on Barfoot Circle. Police say she intervened in a dispute between her friend and Renaldo Garcia Winship and was shot in the side.
Winship, 24, was arrested hours later on charges of murder, use of a firearm, burglary while armed, and domestic assault and battery. He was due in Hampton Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Thursday.
According to police, the woman was the mother of Winship's children.
There were two children, ages five and three, in the house at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt.
Police Thursday said 23-year-old Shakeemah Dainelle Walker was charged with accessory after the fact of murder.
"Due to the impending prosecution, I am not able to elaborate on the actions of Ms. Walker during this incident," said police spokesman Cpl. Mary Shackelford.
Walker is due in court on November 8, according to online records.
The investigation continues.
