HAMPTON — A 61-year-old Hampton man arrested last week, and charged with
beating his mother to death with a hammer, was found dead in his cell
early Wednesday morning at the Hampton City Jail.
James Ernest Barnes was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell,
Col. Karen Bowden of the Hampton Sheriff's Office said. Barnes had a
single cell and was alone at the time he was found by a member of the
Bowden said no cause of death has been determined. She said Barnes had
not visited the infirmary or complained of any medical ailments. His
body has been sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
Barnes was arrested on Dec. 9 and charged with the murder of his mother,
86-year-old Elain Richie Mosley. According to the police report, she was
beaten with a hammer in the home she and Barnes shared on Harrison
Street. She died later that night of her injuries.
