NEWPORT NEWS (AP) — The sister of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty 20 years ago will speak at the Newport News Police Department's annual memorial ceremony for fallen officers.
Karen Rutherford-Coulson will be the keynote speaker at the May 8 ceremony at police headquarters at 9710 Jefferson Avenue. Her brother, Steve Rutherford, was shot and killed in 1994 while posing as a pizza delivery man following a rash of robberies of delivery drivers. Councilman Robert Coleman and Police Chief Richard Myers will also speak.
The ceremony also will include a 21-gun salute and a roll call of the 11 Newport News officers who have died in the line of duty.
Hampton‘s memorial and honor award ceremony is Monday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at Honor Park, which is located between City Hall and the Public Safety Building in downtown.
Three Hampton Police Officers have been killed in the line of duty: Ralph Ghivizzani in1943, Mark Decuypere in 1975 and Kenny Wallace in 1994.
Honor Park recognizes the sacrifices of Hampton’s fallen officers as well as military personnel who served during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War.
The City of Portsmouth Tuesday honored their fallen law enforcement brothers and sisters. Thee Police Cross was presented to the family of fallen Police Detective Garland L. Joyner, Jr. who was killed on March 18, 1984. The Police Cross is awarded to the family of a police officer who has made the supreme sacrifice of his or her life while in the line of duty.
