PORTSMOUTH -- An effort is building to bring light rail to another city in Hampton Roads.

A group of almost 1,000 supporters has taken to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to show their support to extend the Tide to Portsmouth.

The city is far behind efforts to extend light rail in Virginia Beach, and Norfolk continues to study an extension to the Navy base.

Still, supporters are hoping to get the ball rolling after tolls were approved at the Midtown and Downtown tunnels.

"I think it would be great given the tunnel situation going on right now," said Portsmouth resident Jonathan Mercer.

Others don't support the idea. Resident Horace McClenny would rather see improved bus services in Portsmouth.

"I don't think light rail should even be discussed right now," McClenny said.

Since it’s still early in the process, city officials are not commenting on the feasibility of the extension.
