4:33 p.m. UPDATE:  The suspect was apprehended by a police K9 unit and was transported to the hospital, police said.

9:55 a.m. UPDATE: Police say the lockdown has been lifted.

VIRGINIA BEACH-Green Run High School in Va. Beach school was put on external lockdown as a precaution as police searched for a man who tried to rob someone.

Police spokeswoman Tonya Borman told WVEC.com that someone gave a man a ride around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and, during the trip, the man pulled a gun and demanded money.

The man jumped from the car in the area of Dahlia Drive and Forestwood Drive and ran off, she added.

"So, as a precaution, the school has been placed on external lockdown," she stated.

There is no threat at the school itself, which is located on Dahlia Drive.

The driver described the robber as black, about 5’8", thin, dreads in a ponytail and wearing red sweatpants and brown jacket.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Anyone with information should call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Previously, school officials explained that in an external lockdown, all exterior doors are locked and a sign is posted at the main entrance. If the situation allows, parents will be admitted to the school after showing proper identification.
