HAMPTON -- A teenage girl was rescued from an ice-covered lake in Hampton Thursday afternoon.
According to Hampton Fire officials, the girl was trying to rescue her dogs from the icy water in the the first block of Southall Landings. She was about 12 feet feet from the shoreline, lying on a kayak with both pets on board.
Firefighters tried to reach the girl with pike poles, rope and other equipment.
The girl was rescued when a medic/firefighter donned a marine dry rescue suit with a tether and pulled her and the dogs to safety.
The girl was exposed to the elements for approximately 15 minutes and was transported to Sentara Careplex for further observation.
