NORFOLK - Get ready to see a “Better Block’ on Granby Street north of Brambleton Avenue.

There are plans for pop-up retail, public art and pedestrian-friendly areas, but the community will help decide what happens, with some help from the Better Block project.

The group of community organizers, neighbors, and property owners work to revitalize a single commercial block in an underused neighborhood.

The City of Norfolk is paying $33,000 plus expenses for the group's input in hopes of improving economic development and community interest in the neighborhood.

The city believes its injecting life and vibrancy into an area which has the potential for economic development and growth.

"What’s exciting is the entire community is going to learn how to do this and hopefully carry it back and you’ll see more Better Blocks popping up all over. Small improvements, we believe yield big results," said spokeswoman Lori Crouch.

Granby Street Better Block is scheduled to begin April 2013.

The contract includes build plans for Five Points and 35th Street, to begin sometime this summer, as well as street and traffic control build plans, creating lists of necessary materials, rentals and vendors, loca and national  marketing and more.
