UPDATE 9:25 a.m.: Leak has been secured; drivers can use northbound lanes on Newtown Road; all lanes in the area should be open by 10 a.m., Norfolk fire officials say.

NORFOLK -- A gas leak hit during the middle of the morning rush on a busy Norfolk road.  

Newtown Road from Virginia Beach Blvd. to Interstate 264 is closed and police are directing traffic in the area.

Virginia National Gas spokesman Duane Bourne told WVEC.com that line was damaged by a third party worked on the site and crews were responding to make repairs.

It wasn't clear how long the approximately 1/2 mile stretch of Newtown would be closed.
