WAVERLY (AP) -- A former treasurer with Waverly's volunteer fire department in Sussex County has been charged with misappropriating $60,000 in department money.
Arthur B. Barnes Jr. faces a federal wire fraud charge after an investigation by the Secret Service.
According to papers filed in federal court, Barnes is accused of using a department credit card to run up $60,000 in cash advances and other unauthorized purchases for his own benefit.
The documents say Barnes tapped into the department's checking and money market accounts to pay the credit card bills. The government is seeking the return of $60,776.
