ASHBURN--  A former Virginia Beach school principal was struck and killed by a car near her home.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office says 60-year-old Kathleen Hwang of Sterling was trying to cross a street when she was hit by an SUV Wednesday afternoon. She died at the scene.

Authorities say she was not in a crosswalk and apparently did not see the SUV rounding a curve before she stepped into the road. There are no charges are pending.

Hwang was principal of Sanders Corner Elementary since 2005. Prior to that, PilotOnline.com reports that Hwang taught at several Virginia Beach schools including Alanton Elementary, Lynnhaven Middle School and Larkspur Middle School. She was an assistant principal at Trantwood Elementary.
