NORFOLK -- Downtown Norfolk businesses hope you'll spend summer Friday nights with them.

July 5 is the very first First Fridays street party on Granby Street, put on by the Downtown Norfolk Council, Tidewater Community College and the NorVa.

Special guest to kick off the monthly event is of Norfolk's Legends of Music Walk of Famers, Gary U.S. Bonds. In the 50s, he helped to create the Norfolk Sound, which was then “borrowed” in Britain to produce the Liverpool Sound. Bonds recorded almost a dozen releases that charted on Billboard Top 100. How important was he to American music? He headlined above The Beatles on his 1963 European tour. Bonds has recorded with “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes to name a few.

But about First Fridays, each event in July, August, September and October, will feature a great musical act, pop-up businesses, a beer garden and more.
