7 a.m. UPDATE: Elm Avenue has reopened; fire investigation continues.
PORTSMOUTH -- A house in Portsmouth was badly damaged by fire early Monday.
Firefighters were called to the 2300 block of Elm Avenue near Portsmouth Blvd. just after 4 a.m.
Crews at the scene say they arrived to find flames coming from the roof.
The firefight caused several roads in the area to be closed: Elm Avenue at Gilmerton Avenue, Elm Avenue at Palmer Street and in the 2300 block of Elm Avenue, where the fire is burning.
There are no reports of injuries.
Juan Lee says house next door to his has been vacant for about a year and is one of several empty homes in the street.
Capt. Kelsey Pittman with the Portsmouth Fire Department says the damage is extensive and crews will work to determine what sparked the fire.
