VIRGINIA BEACH -- The family of a 16-year-old boy killed in a weekend crash issued a statement about the incident and their loss.

Joey Fonseca was a passenger in the vehicle that crashed into a tree early Sunday.

Police say his friend, also 16, was driving drunk and lost control.

"I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for the outgoing love and support from family, friends, including Kempsville and neighboring communities. It has been overwhelming. Please stay focused to the moral and spiritual aspect of this tragic accident. Our prayers also extend to the driver and his family," Steve and Brenda Fonseca said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon.

Funeral services for their son will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Graham Funeral Home on Kempsville Road in Chesapeake.

Donations to the Joey Fonseca Memorial Fund can be made at any RBC Centura Bank.

The name of the teen driver hasn't been released because of his age. He's charged with DUI and involuntary manslaughter.
