SUFFOLK --  An explosive device was found near the old Tidewater Community College campus in Suffolk Thursday morning.

A contractor working in the 7000 block of College Drive found the device around 8 a.m.

The explosive device is believed to be an unexplored shell, possibly from World War II, officials said.

The Military Explosives Ordinance Disposal responded to the scene, loaded it onto a truck and transported to Yorktown Naval Weapons Station for disposal.

The location is the site of a former military weapons depot, and explosive devices have been found in the area previously, especially after heavy rains, officials said.

There were no injuries.
