NEWPORT NEWS -- A 79-year-old North Carolina man died in Newport News Friday when equipment from a flatbed truck fell on top of him, officials said.
According to police spokeswoman Holly McPherson, two men were transporting various pieces of equipment on a flatbed truck and the load shifted in the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue.
The men pulled over to the side of the road to inspect the load and were adjusting the cargo straps when a piece of equipment fell on one of the men. He was pronounced dead at the scene, McPherson said.
The identity of the victim and the employer will be released once his next of kin are notified.
The Crash Reconstruction Team and Commercial Motor Carrier Unit are working together to investigate the accident, McPherson said.
