PORTSMOUTH -- Organizers hoping to recall Portsmouth Mayor James Holley have set a Jan. 15 deadline to collect the required number of signatures.
So far they have collected 6,630 signatures, just short of the required 6,668 to spark a recall election, said Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky in an e-mail Tuesday.
He said they want to obtain an extra 1,400 signatures to compensate for any invalid entries on the petition.
The recall rules require obtaining signatures from 30 percent of the number of voters in the last gubernatorial election.
The recall effort, coordinated by a group of Portsmouth residents, began this summer after the City Council fined Holley for asking a city-paid assistant to do personal chores for him.
The City Council also voted in favor of Holley resigning.
