DARE COUNTY, NC -- Students have been in school in Dare County since August 25 and already they're getting some unexpected days off.

Officials have cancelled school and after-school activities on Thursday and Friday

The makeup days have been set for Saturday, September 11, and Friday, October 29.

Officials also said the Protected Optional Teacher Workday previously scheduled for Friday, October 29, will be held on Saturday, October 30. It will be a half-day.

Mainland schools in Hyde County will close at 1:00 p.m. Thursday and be closed Friday.

Currituck County closed school for the day Thursday, but teachers were still to report.

Elizabeth City State University will delay opening by two hours Friday, with classes beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Essential employees are expected to report to the university at their regularly scheduled hours.

In Virginia, Tidewater Community College will be closed Friday.

Thomas Nelson Community College will be closed on Friday -- the Hampton and Historic Triangle Campuses and the Southeast Higher Education Center. 

Old Dominion University has cancelled classes on all campuses from 7:00 p.m. Thursday through Friday.  

Students who live in the residence halls are advised to remain indoors throughout the duration of the storm. Residence hall directors and advisors will be on hand to assist with any concerns.

Old Dominion University police will be patrolling the campus and securing buildings throughout the evening and tomorrow. Campus emergencies should be reported to police by calling 683-4000.
