NORFOLK -- Potentially dangerous heat is hovering over the region Wednesday with highs in the upper 90s and a potential heat index over 100 degrees.
EMS workers in Virginia Beach responded to several heat-related calls at the Oceanfront.
In one hour, there were two calls for people who were unconscious due to extreme heat. They were sweating, dizzy and unaware of where they were.
Battalion Chief Steve Lesinski says dehydration is common -- especially for those who like to spend their days at the beach bars.
"Alcohol, it dries you out essentially," Lesinski said.
He says the volume of calls they receive will only increase as tourism season kicks into high gear.
"It keeps us very, very busy."

A sign on Coliseum Drive in Hampton said it was 100 degrees Wednesday afternoon.
Michael and Son HVAC technician Ryan Somers says the company is getting a lot of service calls from people with no air conditioning.
"We always account for working late when it's going to be 90 plus degrees and we ask technicians to work days off," he said.
Tips to keep safe in the heat
People looking to cool off at the Main Street Library in Newport News had to go somewhere else today. The library closed at noon because of the excessive heat and problems with their air conditioning.
A group of youngsters from a nearby neighborhood stood at the library door, disappointed after reading the closed sign. One boy said he was hoping to get a drink of water after playing at the playground and he wanted to borrow another book.
The library expects to reopen Thursday.
A front should drop through from the north overnight Thursday, lowering high temperatures Friday and through the weekend.
