NORFOLK -- Crews working at a house in Norfolk hit a gas line.

The line was broken in the 8300 block of Old Ocean View Road in the Colonial Heights neighborhood around 7:40 a.m. Thursday.

Police said crews were working on a demolition project at the home.

"An exclusion zone has been established and hose lines have been deployed as a precautionary measure," said Battalion Chief Julian Williamson told WVEC.com. "They're also using detection and monitoring equipment to monitor the atmosphere."

The situation caused police to close Old Ocean View Road between Vero Street and Mayfield Road until repairs are made.

Virginia Natural Gas is working to secure the leak.
