NEWPORT NEWS - A couple cashed blank checks they stole from a friend with whom they were staying, Newport News Police said.

28-year-old Richard Phillip Fourney, Jr. and 26-year-old Debbie Lynn Mock got more than $2,000 during the weekend of Dec. 21-31, 2013, said police spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

The victim, a 62-year-old man, was notified of the transactions by his bank and called police.

Fourney and Mock were arrested separately on January 9. Mock was arrested during a traffic stop; Fourney was taken into custody at his home. However, he jumped out of the police car before the door was shut, so he was also charged with trying to escape custody, McPherson noted.
