NORFOLK-A man and woman charged with killing a tool salesman in Norfolk last week were in court Monday.
Hassan Harvey and Kasey Rubio were arraigned on charges of 2nd degree murder, robbery, grand larceny and conspiracy in the death of 56-year-old Austin Steven King.
King's body was found inside his burning Mac Tools truck early Friday on I-64 in York County. Authorities said he died from blows to his head.
Police arrested Harvey and Rubio that night and spent Saturday searching Top Dead Center, an auto performance shop on Nevada Avenue. Neighboring business owners said the couple ran that business.
In court, Harvey said he would hire his own attorney, and Rubio was appointed a public defender, said Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie.
Harvey has a hearing on April 1 to tell the court who will be defending him on the charges; Rubio is due in court again on May 20, Howie added.
Harvey's former father-in-law told 13News the charges against Harvey "surprised the Hell out of me." He said he and his wife did not believe Harvey was capable of murder and that they are concerned about how the case could affect Harvey's 2 children.
A memorial service for King takes place March 27 at 3:00 p.m. at Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. Among his surviving relatives are his wife of 31 years, Melanie, and their daughter, Katelyn.
