NORFOLK - A gas leak forced the evacuation of 35 people in Norfolk Commerce Park.

Capt. Mike Hicks with Norfolk Fire and Rescue says a contractor digging a trench using a pick ax severed a 1.25" line on Eltham Ave. before 9:00 a.m.

He added the the gas line was marked.

Virginia Natural Gas crews reached the value and shut off the flow of gas around 9:30 a.m. That allowed fire officials to go into the building to check gas levels.

The employees were allowed to return after the levels were deemed safe.
