NORFOLK - Repairs were completed early Friday to a ruptured gas line at E. Princess Anne and Ballentine Boulevard.

The 12” steel gas main forced the closure of Ballentine Boulevard between Dogan Street and East Princess Anne near construction for the Salvation Army's Kroc Corps Community Center.

There were no evacuations because most of the nearby businesses were closed for the day. The fire department also checked the air for gas and found it not to be a hazard.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue officials said a construction crew hit the line.  A spokesman for the Salvation Army says its contractor, Whiting-Turner, wasn't responsible for the disruption of service to the area.

The break did require the crews to evacuate, but they are back to work today, said Matt Pochily.
