ELIZABETH CITY-- A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Coast Guard Station, Elizabeth City rescued three boaters and their dog Wednesday afternoon.
The boaters' 23-foot boat had run aground in shallow waters at the mouth of the Alligator River near Elizabeth City.
The Tyrell County Sheriff's Office contacted the Coast Guard around 3:30 p.m.and said they had received a 911 call from the boaters.
The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot response boat to assist, but were unable to approach the boaters because of the shallow water.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was sent and it airlifted the boaters and a dog to safety around 5:30 p.m.
They were taken to the Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton where they were met by family.
There were no injuries.
