GLOUCESTER COUNTY -- A 5-year-old child is being treated after she was scratched by a rabid cat in the Hayes area of Gloucester County.
Officials say it happened last week in the area of Bray Road and Winfred Road.
To warn residents about the danger, animal control has placed notices on the doors of homes in that area.
The animal that scratched the child was a stray cat.
Maria Childress says there are too many stray cats in the neighborhood. Childress runs an at-home daycare and has a playground in her backyard. She wonders who might be feeding the strays.
"We're always pushing them away but they're always coming," Childress said.
This is the third rabid animal found in the county this year.
