NEWPORT NEWS – USS Abraham Lincoln is preparing for a new leader.

Capt. Karl O. Thomas will relinquish command to Capt. Ronald L. Ravelo. in a change of command ceremony August 7 at Victory Landing Park in Newport News.

The Lincoln is in Newport News Shipyard undergoing a refueling complex overhaul. The Navy says once the work is done, the carrier will be one of the most modern and technologically advanced Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the fleet.

Capt. Thomas, who took command of the Lincoln in September 2012, will become the commanding officer for USS Carl Vinson, homeported in San Diego, California.

Captain Ravelo assumed command of San Diego-based USS COMSTOCK in February 2013.
