NORFOLK (AP) -- Virginia Port Authority board chairman Michael J. Quillen is stepping down at the end of the year.
Media outlets report that Quillen announced his decision Wednesday.
Quillen recently was appointed as a rector at Virginia Tech. He says he can't do both jobs.
The retired Alpha Natural Resources chairman has served on the authority's Board of Commissioners since 2003. He became chairman in 2011 after Gov. Bob McDonnell replaced the board's other 11 members.
Quillen's pending resignation comes as state officials review proposals from several companies to privatize some of the port's operations.
Quillen's term expired in June. He agreed to continue on an interim basis to help oversee the privatization process. But the schedule has since been extended.
