VIRGINIA BEACH -- A carjacking ended in a crash involving a police vehicle near Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach Thursday.

Police say it started when 34-year-old Jason Smith pulled a woman from her SUV at knifepoint at Town Bank on 22nd Street at the Oceanfront around 3:20 p.m.

The car was spotted by police westbound on I-264 and a chase began on Independence Blvd where the car exited.

The SUV then hit a car at Market St. and Virginia Beach Blvd before being hit itself by a police vehicle at Park Place and Virginia Beach Blvd (Town Center). Police were able to stop the vehicle near Princess Anne High School.

"I just see this car trying to cross the median and then some guy just jumped out of the car while he was driving the car, hits the tree, he surrenders himself, gets tackled and he just starts screaming," said Marko Manojovic.

The suspect was transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, as well as one of the drivers of the cars that was hit.
