VIRGINIA BEACH -- A New York man is facing multiple felony charges after plowing into the bicycle of an on-duty Virginia Beach police officer and crashing into several cars over the weekend.

Police say the incident began in the 1800 block of Atlantic Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.

A uniformed bicycle officer was engaged with another individual when a black Honda Accord struck his duty bike which was parked next to the curb.

The driver, identified as Glenn P. Richardson, 40, then fled the scene and turned onto 16th Street where he ran a red light and struck two cars, police said.  A third vehicle was subsequently hit.

Richardson then got out of his car and attempted to get away on foot, but was taken into custody a short time later.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt. An investigation is still underway.
