PORTSMOUTH -- What started as a vehicle fire has turned into a death investigation in Portsmouth, police say.
Firefighters were called to an alley between the 400 block of Florida Avenue and Mount Vernon Avenue around 5:25 a.m.
Within 15 minutes, police were being called to get to scene as well because someone had been found dead inside the Jeep Cherokee.
The man was found in the rear passenger compartment, said Det. Jan Westerbeck.
Detectives are trying to determine who owns the vehicle, but that job is tougher than usual because of the fire damage, she stated.
