NEWPORT NEWS – Christopher Newport University was on lockdown for more than an hour Wednesday after a robbery at a credit union at CNU Village.
CNU Village is a mixed-use space across from campus on Warwick Blvd. There is retail space and student housing, explained CNU spokeswoman Lori Jacobs.
Police spokesman Harold Eley says the Virginia Educators Credit Union was robbed around 8:45 a.m. by a man with a gun. He forced his way into the rear of the business as personnel were entering for work.
No one was hurt during the robbery, Eley stressed, adding that investigators found a gun believed to have been used in the robbery.
Text alerts to students and CNU employees were sent beginning at 8:51 a.m. The alerts told off-campus students not to go onto campus for now. For on-campus residents, the texts told them to shelter themselves in an interior room.
At 10:13 a.m., a text message was sent saying the emergency situation had ended and it was safe to go to campus.
The office of CNU's chief of police sends the alerts.
Newport News police are investigating.
