NORFOLK-- With the sequester officially signed into law, 800,000 civilian defense department employees can expect to get furlough notices by the end of the month.
Nearly 2,000 shipyard workers at BAE Systems in Norfolk face the possibility of losing work.
Meanwhile, nearby businesses are bracing for the impact. “I’ve been working here a little over a year, and a lot of our business comes from our shipyard. This will affect us in a lot of ways, our profits and everything,” said Dashima Jacobs, a worker at a sandwich shop near BAE.
Jacobs says her boss told staff there is a possibility they could lose their jobs if business drops. “I can get eventually laid off.” Jacobs said. "That's going to affect me in the future, and I'm only 18 years old. It's going to affect my generation.”
