UPDATE 3/4: Police have charged 60-year-old Melvin Williams of the 100 block of West Balview Avenue with felonious assault. He is currently in the Norfolk City Jail on no bond.
According to police, Williams knocked on the door where the boy lives and his grandmother answered. She quickly closed the apartment door because Williams was "behaving erratically with a knife."
The boy was outside the apartment and tried to run inside when he was stabbed by Williams, police said.
Kyle Ahmad's mother told 13News Now Tuesday afternoon that her son still has a tube in his lungs to drain blood, but says he has been alert and able to talk for parts of the day.
Police said the victim and suspect were known to each other only as neighbors.
NORFOLK -- A 10-year-old boy was stabbed in the 100 block of West Balview Ave. in Norfolk around 3 p.m. Monday, police said.
According to spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson, the child was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. He has since been moved to CHKD.
Parker-Chesson said an adult male was taken into custody but did not release the man's name or possible charges.
The boy's family told 13News Now, the boy was stabbed during a home break-in.
"I opened the door and he [the suspect] darted at with his knife, so I got away from the door locking it," said the boy's grandmother Robin Miller. "My grandson must have been playing out here and heard what was going on, the ruckus going on, so he was coming up the steps and he stabbed him.”
Miller said her grandson was stabbed in the lung and kidney. "He's fine, but he almost lost his life," she said.
Information about a motive has not been released.
