VIRGINIA BEACH – It’s all about the heart on Valentine’s Day.
At a boot camp in Va. Beach, it’s all about loving your heart.
The American Heart Association says one in three people in this country have some form of heart disease, including angina, heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure, coronary disease, and other serious conditions.
The owner of Virginia Beach Adventure Boot Camp says there are some easy-to-follow preventive measures that will help keep heart problems at bay, including exercising regularly, quitting smoking and keeping track of your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Adam Pismeny, a certified fitness boot camp instructor, notes that there are simple, heart-healthy exercises that don’t require expensive equipment or memberships.
The trend in heart fitness is interval training.
“It combines higher intensity bouts of work followed by lower intensity work. The reason I use it with my clients is because not only does it help improve cardiovascular health, but it increases the metabolism for 24 hours or more after the exercise is performed. This is especially important for people who are trying to lose weight," he says.
Any brisk activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, will be beneficial in strengthening the heart and lungs and improving the body's ability to use oxygen. Just make sure you move an energetic pace, he states.
February also is the American Heart Association's American Heart Month.
