UPDATE  Friday 1:45 PM:  Virginia Beach police have identified the victim of a homicide at the Red Roof Inn at 5725 Northampton Blvd. He is 46-year-old Joseph "Jo-Jo" Andrea Rogers of Portsmouth.  

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police say a suspicious death investigation at at a motel in Virginia Beach has turned into a homicide case.

Officers are on the scene at the Red Roof Inn at 5745 Northampton Blvd.  Photographs show crime scene tape blocking off access to the back of a building.

Around midnight, police responded to the America's Best Value Inn, just down the street, (5725 Northampton Blvd.) for reports of shots being fired. Officers responded but didn't find anyone, according to police.

Then, around 8 a.m. Wednesday, a guest at the Red Roof Inn found a body near the stairwell and called police.  The man had been shot.

One hotel guest said, "I can't believe it. We've been here since the 28th, but we're leaving tomorrow."
