NEWPORT NEWS -- A bird caused an outage that put more than 1,700 people in the dark in Newport News.

It got into equipment near Warwick Blvd. and Main Street near the railroad tracks around 7:05 a.m. and caused damaged the circuit breaker, which blew two transformer fuses, Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris told WVEC.com.

Crews were working to get the power restored, but it wasn't expected to be restored until about 3 p.m.

The outage affected Hilton Elementary School and the Hilton police precinct, but classes weren't affected because it's spring break.
