VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police are running random checkpoints to catch drunk drivers this holiday weekend.
"We have 20 to 30 fatal crashes each year. Usually about 60 percent are alcohol related. We want to reduce crashes," Sgt. Scott Wichtendahl said.
Officers stopped hundreds of drivers Saturday night, looking for signs of too much drinking.
In 2009 Virginia Beach police charged 2,413 people with DUIs. Of the 22 fatal crashes that occured in 2009, 12 involved alcohol.
The beach has a no tow program. You ask an officer for a sticker for your car windshield. That way you can leave your car overnight and take a cab home.
