VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for abusing his girlfriend last March.
Between March 24 and 26, 25-year-old Andrews VanVleet punched his girlfriend in the face, shook her, choked her, and pulled her hair. The victim suffered a fracture to her orbital wall, memory loss and bruising to her face, jaw, arms and torso.
The victim was brought to the hospital twice following the abuse, first by family members and then by rescue.
VanVleet, formerly of the 1600 block of Hedgerow Drive, was found guilty of unlawful wounding, abduction, and assault and battery of a family member.
"This case demonstrates the seriousness with which my office views domestic assault prosecutions,” Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach Colin D. Stolle said. “The jury’s sentence indicates that citizens of Virginia Beach will not tolerate domestic abuse.”
VanVleet has two prior convictions for assault and battery of a family member and has been convicted of receiving stolen property, grand larceny, credit card fraud, credit card forgery, conspiracy and petit larceny.
