VIRGINIA BEACH – Schools in Hampton Roads are fighting to keep their saved cash.

Last year, Virginia Beach City Council voted to spend $8.8 million in school savings to help fund city projects like an animal shelter and recreation center.

That decision outraged many teachers and education leaders.

In response, Del. Bob Tata, (R-85th D.) introduced a bill to change state law.

Right now, leftover education cash goes back to the city. Del. Tata wants that money to stay with the school board. Schools could use the extra funds for the next school year.

"I don't have a problem with delegate Tata's bill," said Mayor Will Sessoms.  "I do think there should be a cap on it."

Education leaders say schools should be able to keep all money saved.  It's an incentive to spend taxpayers dollars wisely.

Virginia Beach Vice-Mayor Louis Jones defended council’s decision to use remaining school funds.

“About half the city’s budget funds local schools. Our purpose was to balance the city’s budget. The school budget was over-funded,” he said.

Del. Tata’s pre-filed his bill - #1786 - on January 11 and it was offered January 12. It’s been referred to the Education Committee.
