NORFOLK – Starting January 3, commercial drivers across the country will no longer be allowed to legally use cell phones while driving.
The hand-held phone ban from the Department of Transportation is generating a lot of discussion. Some frustrated drivers are wondering why the ban doesn't apply to everyone.
Truck driver Tony Whack admits he’s talked on the phone while driving and says it’s time for a change.
"I've noticed myself on the phone, not paying attention, and that's why I bought my hands-free phone," said Whack.
According to the new law, commercial drivers will be able to talk on a phone as long as it is used without being held.
It is a primary law, meaning police officers can pull truck drivers over just for holding their phones while driving. There does not have to be another reason why they’re pulling over the driver.
Bills to ban hand-held phone usage for all drivers have repeatedly failed at the state level.
