NORFOLK -- The first Amtrak train arrived at Harbor Park on Tuesday afternoon for Wednesday's inaugural trip.  Officials say it's been 35 years since the city was served by passenger rail service.

Passengers can travel to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York City and as far north as Boston starting Dec. 12.

Demand for the first ride was so high that Amtrak added four more cars - an additional 280 seats.

City and state officials hope people will opt for the train and help reduce congestion on traffic-filled interstates.

Plans call for building a station at Harbor Park to connect the train to The Tide light rail transit, buses and the Elizabeth River ferry.

To check the route or book a ride, go to the Amtrak Virginia Website or call 1-800-USA-RAIL.   Through December 30, tickets to Washington, DC are on sale for $19.00 each way.
