NEWPORT NEWS – A new airline is coming to call at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport.

Allegiant Air says it will offer introductory fares as low as $64.99 one way beginning November 16 to Orlando via Orlando Sanford International Airport.

“We're pleased to bring an affordable and convenient travel option to Newport News,” Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company President, said. “We are confident the Newport News-Williamsburg community and all of Southeastern Virginia will appreciate flying nonstop to Orlando and take advantage of the great deals we offer on hotels, car rentals and theme park tickets.”

“We have been working with Allegiant Air to serve Southeastern Virginia for over a year now,” stated Ken Spirito, Executive Director of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. “We are extremely excited to welcome Allegiant Air to our community as a new business partner. Not only will Allegiant Air’s low fares and great destinations be an asset to our community, we also see this as a way to expand our destination as well.”

The company’s website says all travel is ticketless, all fares are one-way and a Saturday night stay is never required.

Allegiant Air focuses on leisure travel with an emphasis on low-fares, nonstop flights, innovative vacation packages and leisure traffic to world-class destinations.

It flies the MD80 series aircraft.

The announcement comes about three weeks after AirTran Airways announced it would cease operations at the airport in March.

Allegiant flights will operate four times weekly between Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport with service Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Flights will depart Newport News at 3:30 p.m. arriving in Orlando-Sanford at 5:20 p.m. Flights leaving Orlando-Sanford will depart at 1:00 p.m. arriving in Newport News at 2:50 p.m. (all flight times are local).

The introductory fare is limited, must be purchased by Sept. 7, 2011, and is valid for travel between Nov. 16, 2011, and Feb. 14, 2012. Company officials say the introductory fares are not available on all flights.
