NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A 61-year-old doctor in Virginia Beach is going to prison.
Ronald Poulin was sentenced in federal court Monday to five years and three months in prison for health care fraud, making false statements relating to health care matters and altering records to obstruct an investigation.
U.S District Judge Mark S. Davis also ordered Poulin to pay more than $790,000 in restitution.
U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride said the oncologist and hematologist filed several hundred false and fraudulent claims totaling nearly $1.3 million between January 2006 and August 2008.
When investigators started looking into the matter, MacBride said Poulin also altered patient and billing records in an attempt to obstruct and influence the investigation.
