NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Norfolk Division of the FBI is warning the public about potential fraud involving relief efforts for Haitian earthquake victims.

The FBI advises residents to verify individuals and nonprofits claiming to help victims before making donations and to never share personal or financial information with anyone.

Also, checks should never be made payable to individuals.

The FBI also encourages residents to delete unsolicated e-mails.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud should contact the National Center for Disaster Fraud at (866) 720-5721 or send an e-mail to disaster(at)leo.gov.
